AUI lions’ season kicks off amidst uncertainty

Regardless of the restrictions imposed by the current health situation, AUIers did not hesitate to start their sports season this semester. The 50% capacity policy heavily affected the department and reduced the number of activities and beneficiaries. Teams are facing the biggest challenges now more than ever.

Newcomers constituting the majority of teams

Since half of AUI students are doing their semester online, the atheltics teams are constituted mostly of newcomers. These particular circumstances are affecting the dynamics within teams and shifitng their priorities. Teams’ captains are now more development-oriented. Omar Touira, the footbal team captain, explains that he is focused on sustaining the continuity of the team by trying to pass on his knowledge and skills to newcomers.

This situation is creating new traditions for athletics who were so used to having old members paving the way for the newbies. Due to the global pandemic, the new members will have to adapt on their own and will not be as blended in as the previous ones.

Still on track regardless of the health constraints

According to Omar Mankour, the basketball team captain, AUI lions teams are practicing their respective sports in a way that is respecting the health measures established by the university. One cannot forbid these activities since they constitute an essential element of a student’s life. They allow individuals to unleash their academic stress and even improve their performance in classes, as stated by Hamza Benthami, the Boxing club captain.

The COVID-19 pandemic might have interrupted everyone’s lives. However, one must adapt to the new normal by continuing on what once was established while adding new methods and techniques that would ensure everyone’s safety. AUI lions have once again proven that they are fearless and unbeatable. Their passion has ensured their continuity and survival. Thus, this semester’s sports season will be unique and full of surprises that everyone is excited to discover.
